Learn to Sail!
The Clubs offers a number of opportunities for children and adults within the community to become involved in sailing.
FUN SAIL
Tuesday & Thursday from 5:00pm to 7:30pm from July 1-August 28. This is not an instructional session. Participants should have sailing knowledge and know how to set up a dinghy. $20 per person for non members. $10 per person for Senior, Social and Intermediate members. Junior Members are free. Attendees of camp programs can attend the funs sails at no cost during the camps they are registered for.
RACE TEAM
The SNSYC Race Team is a program open to sailors with a minimum CANSail 2 and are interested in trying out more competitive dinghy racing. The team uses Optimists and C420 sailboats, giving sailors the opportunity to both learn how to race and advance their current skillset in a welcoming and safe environment.
Practices are Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:00pm-8:00pm. During practices sailors will be taught the basics of racing, participate in drills to aid in skills relevant to racing and continue to grow in their understanding of racing theory and tactics.
Throughout the season sailors will have the opportunity to participate in Provincial regattas hosted both on the Island and Mainland at other yacht clubs, which provide an amazing opportunity to test their skills in a new competitive setting. Regattas do require the participation of both parents and sailors to help with transport and planning beforehand and are an additional to the cost of participating in the team. If interested in participating in these events sailors will need to communicate their availability and interest to instructors by a set deadline throughout the season and there must be enough interest amongst the team in order to attend.
As the Race teams run during the Spring and Fall it's important for sailors to come prepared for all types of weather that we encounter during these seasons. It is recommended that sailors come prepared with rain jackets and pants, waterproof shoes (boots recommended for colder sessions), plenty of warm layers as well as extra clothes to wear after practices.
