Life on the Lights

Presented by Bob Evans

SNSYC member Bob Evans spent the early part of his childhood living in communities up and down BC’s west coast.  His father worked as a Department of Transport radio operator and the family spent a number of years at a lighthouse station on the west coast of Vancouver Island.  In his presentation Bob will tell us tales of what life was like growing up far from civilization, without fresh food, and absent a normal school life.

Bob's first three years of schooling were conducted around the family dining room table where his mother did her best to inculcate some sense of the 'three Rs' into her eldest son.  A slow learner, Bob did manage to finish high school in Saanich and then studied for the next 10 years at various universities.  Still not really prepared to join the real world, he spent the next 31 years teaching at UBC where he ended up as Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department and, finally, as Associate Dean of Applied Science.

Each Speakers' Series event is preceded by a special buffet prepared by our Chef and his staff and is served at 18:00.

The dishes Chef prepares are often inspired by the topic of the talk. In the past we’ve dined in style on French, Mexican, Russian, British, and Thai cuisines, just to mention a few.

Starting at 19:15, we are treated to an illustrated talk by SNSYC members or presenters from the wider community.

The presentations deal with such things as sailing exploits, travelling on foot and by bicycle in foreign lands, cruising on ships and canal boats, environmental issues and much more.
