SCHOOL SAILING LEAGUE

Sidney North Saanich Yacht Club, along with Royal Victoria Yacht Club and the local School Districts, organize and host the Southern Vancouver Island School Sailing League. The league is an ideal opportunity for students from Grades 6 - 12 to form school sailing teams and learn to sail and enjoy friendly competition. SNSYC hosts four schools in our area: Parkland Secondary, Stelly's Secondary, North Saanich Middle School and Bayside Middle School. Spring 2017 there are 37 students from these schools sailing at SNSYC with the School League. The first School League was held in the fall of 2012, with 100 students from the Greater Victoria area schools participating, and it continues to grow. Brief overview of the program:

  • Fall session runs September - November
  • Spring session runs April - June
  • On the water practice sessions at SNSYC: twice a week from 4pm to 6pm plus Saturdays 9:30 - 12:30 and 1 - 4. Each group has 5 hours per week of practice time. Final regatta in June at RVYC with all the schools teams
  • No sailing experience is necessary! Just an interest in boats and the water
  • Students (or their parents) do not need to be members SNSYC to participate.
  • The emphasis is on learning, safety, and fun! Friendly competition is a bonus.
  • A lead coach is assigned to each team and is responsible for running the practices and safety.
  • Boats: Optimist, Flying Junior, and 420 dinghies
  • Training: conforms the national CanSail certification program
